I think there were two different styles of mag available on the "D", depending on the year. I think there was a base-mounted version, and the flange-mounted version that is found on other two-cylinders, like the "A" and "B". I can't say about the base-mounted mag, but the flange-mounted Wico mags fire on every engine revolution. They fire at the end of the compression stroke to create the power stroke, and again at the end of the exhaust stroke. You may want to post this question on the JD board, as there are some electrical system gurus on there than can tell you much more than I can.
