your a little confused. very simply in generic terms, the pump pumps oil stored in a tank to a valve(s) then back to the tank. when a valve is operated then oil goes out to the cylinder and extends it out (ram cylinders) when the valve is released then the oil has no where to go and the ram stops at that position. when the valve is moved to the opposite position then the oil is allowed to return to the tank allowing the ram to retract. the pump pumps oil stored in a tank to a valve(s) then back to the tank. when a valve is operated then oil goes out to the cylinder and extends it out (double acting cylinders) also oil is returned from the other side of the piston to the tank. when the valve is released then the oil has no where to go and the cylinder stops at that position. when the valve is moved to the opposite position then the oil goes out to the other side of the cylinder pushing the piston back in retracting the cylinder.oil is also allowed to return to the tank from the bottom side of the cylinder.
