You could hang the coil out in the air on a stick to see if it still gets hot. Duct tape works here.
It's more likely that the coil is drawing too much current causing the heat. One way that could happen is if the wire to the points is shorted, or if the points themselves are shorted inside the distributor. Check with a meter for ground with the points open and the 6/12v to the coil disconnected. Another possibility is that a resistance wire between the start switch and the coil has been replaced with an ordinary wire.
Some cars use the resistance wire, I'm not sure about small engines.
