Sounds like your amp guage wiring is correct. You should have only the wire to the battery on 1 post while the alternator output and all acessory feed wires (ignition,lights etc)go on the other post. The burned out diode is a clue. If the new diode is installed in the exciter wire backwards or is too small an amp rating the alternator will not excite(charge). Is this a Delco 10 SI alternator with built in regulator? If so using a small 12V test light you should have power to the #1 wire in the regulator plug only when the ignition is on and constant power to the #2 wire.
