Go for it. About 20 years ago I bought an electric fork lift that was in a building that burnt to the ground. My fellow workers thought that I was nuts, half of the steering wheel was melted (aluminum), hydrolic hoses burnt off, and all control wiring was burnt with the micro switches. Upon closer inspection, I found the control cabinet was ok, it was located at the bottom of the fork lift. The hydrolic lift cylinder seals were ok even though the hoses were gone. Also the elecric motor, hydrolic pump and drive train were ok. Dismantaled the unit, sand blasted it and painted it. Also had to replace a drive wheel. Reassesmbled everthing, borrowed a service manual and replaced the control wiring and put in new hydrolic hoses. For the half missing steering wheel I bent a piece of half inch alluminum rigid pipe (being that I am an electrician) and welded it to the rest of the steering wheel. It was a 48 volt unit, I put in (4) 12 volt cat batties. It was a fun project. I used the unit for over 2 years befor I sold it.
