I guess all the old equipment is the same wether it's a saw mill, a tractor, or whatever, it will all talk to you if you know what to listen for. That's the difference between a mechanic, and one of todays new "technicians". A mechanic knows how to use all of his senses first, including common sense, and then move on to whatever guage, etc is needed to further identify and correct the problem. The first thing a technician does is plug in the computer and let the tractors computer tell that computer and then him what is wrong so he can fix it. It takes 99% of the mechanic part out of it and just makes for a bunch of parts changers. The way I look at it though, the old mechanical stuff will be still be around when the rest is headed to the scrap heap, and since it takes a real mechanic to work on it I'll never be out of a job.
