Old is correct, your engine would not have a waterpump. When your M was made, the John Deeres were still using a "Thermosyphon" cooling system. In priciple (as old said), hot water rises, and cold water sinks, and with some good enginnering, this made the water circulate through the engine. The water will not begin moving until things start getting warm. Yes, you will want to make sure the radiator is full, so the water will circulate. Also, I've heard of problems with cooling on the M tractors, if you do not pre-mix the antifreeze before filling, and if you have too much antifreeze with the water. I cannot give specifics. You may want to do a search on that through the old JD board archives for advice, or just ask again.
