Better to check the rings now while the head is off. Will only cost you time and maybe a new sump gasket? Later, will mean removing the head again.
Could be gummed rings, stuck in the grooves, causing the problem - do you use detergent or non-detergent oil?
Not filtering the oil could have contributed to the problem?!
