I have a 1981 model 650 John Deere compact diesel, with almost 1400 hrs on it, did replace a piston in it once. NEVER use ETHER in them!!!! Aalso had the injection pump rebuilt this summer, but other than that have done very little in the way of repairs, just mantainence on it. Like the size, the 8 fwd transmission, and differential lock. Guess the one shortfall is the lack of a live pto. I added power steering on it to use with a loader. I use it with a 5' Mott flail mower and love it. The flail mower takes less power to pull, and does not throw rocks, sticks and other things like the rotary and finish type mowers do. Would have to say that this Yanmar Manufactured John Deere is a tough one. Gene Davis
