Have an 86 F-250 ford farm truck that does this every so often too. Just for no reason you go out to start it and nothing happens exept you crank and crank until the battery is dead and no fire. Mine has always been the fuel pump relay. Open the hood and look on the drivers side clear to the fire wall. On the fire wall there is a black plastic top screwed in there with two relays under it. Now my friends 85 doesnt have anything in the fire wall his is loose on the fender well, so you may have to look around a little. Anyway what you are looking for is a relay about 1 inch cube that is green. I normally tap on the relay a little and then go and start the truck, or unplug it and plug it back in and then the truck starts. That tells me the problem and then I have to go get another at advance or wherever. This relay controls the electric fuel pump in the truck. When you first turn the key on you will hear the fuel pump build up pressure and then cut off. If you turn the key on and listen under the truck and dont hear the pump build pressure, the relay is bad. Try that and see what happens Good Luck

He had told my father
