If the tractor is in good mechanical shape and kept tuned, a 6 volt system should be perfectly adequate. I've seen too many times where people band-aid a poorly tuned antique engine (mostly marine) by "upgrading" a 6 volt system to 8 volt and, when that stop working, going up to 12 volt. Fix the original problem first - high current wiring, compression, fuel, ignition, starter motor, generator/regulator, etc.
