Well, I had a 640 JD rake that was in the family for 30 years and what you suggest didn't happen (ever) to it! It was the jackstand model, and when it became damaged in an accident, I replaced it with a NH 258, but there isn't any visible difference in the raking that I can see. Both rakes work very well. I got the NH (used) because it was available, and no JD rakes were.

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
