The old ramp and roller TA's were easily wrecked by letting the tractor freewheel down a hill or roll backwards while in forward gear or forwards while in reverse gear.

The ramp and roller works kind of like a ratchet wrench when free-wheeling, and that wears it out faster.

Slow shifting of the TA wrecked the clutch quickly, the shift should take no longer than 1 second to complete. This goes for mechanical or hydraulic TA.
