Buy a one wire alternator. They are usually rebuilt GMs. They cost me $35 in Western , Pa. Remove the generator, regulator and the wiring. Flip the generator bracket upside down and grind the bracket on theright top, to allow the alternator to touch the oil cover. Get a piece of all thread slighly longer than the generator mounting bracket. Drill out the holes to accomodate the all thread. Attach the alternator using the all thread. Run one wire back to the amp gauge, but reverse the direction thru the gauge. Buy a block Chrysler resistor for the points to knock the voltage down to 6 volts. They cost about $3. Put in a 12 volt battery and hook it up negative ground. Change your lights or light bulbs to 12 volt and you are good to go. By flipping the old generator mounting bracket over you can still use the old belt. I have done many of these and it really isn't hard after the first one.
