Allis-Chalmers G's were built to adapt to various row spacings by choosing the dish placement (in/out)and rim placement, inside, outside, etc.
The front axle was also adjustable to match the rear.
Farmers being what they are have modified tractors to their owm needs from the git-go.
In our area, Orange County New York, a muck onion growing area, it is common to find AC-G's that are widened out to 68" wheel centers. This is done by having spacers placed between the end of the axles and the wheel dish. (Some guys go the cheap and dirty route, use long bolts and a couple of pounds of flat washers to offset the rim farther out from the dish) Now back to your skinny G. What is the measurement from the center of one tire to the other. This is the track. Is your 40" measurement the track, the outside tire to outside tire or from axle end to axle end (i.e. will it fit through a door opening 40" wide. Are your axle housings original? If they haven't been shortened then it would still be factory. The why its so narrow? Might have been used in a Vineyard or similar crop situation, high crop with narrow pathways between. (What part of the country are you in?) Or maybe it needed to be stored in a very narrow spot. Oh, by the way, be very careful making turns with a narrow tractor, especially at speed.
