I was in the same boat a while back..

If you like to tinker a little bit get a good used one these.. JD, Wheelhorse, cub cadet(pre mtd), bolens, - you can get parts and add ons very easily -

a 46 inch deck is not that large a deck - if you go with the mulching type you need slightly more HP.

There are always retired local guys that fix these things as a hobby somewhere in town - go see him.

New - Wheelhorse, powerking, kubota, jd, sabre, scotts.

Look for the cast iron engines -

hydro static is good for cutting lawns, allows you to speed up and slow down easily,

Look to see HOW the attachements are added and how easily the get added on. Make the guy in the shop take off the mower and add the snow blower or plow, remember YOU will be doing this later on.

Look to see HOW MANY attachements there are.

The high end tractors from any line should have the following features..
Oil pumps - protect engines better
Cast iron engines
low oil engine shutoff
a low and high range for manual tranny's
REAL brakes - this is important if you have hills and carry heavy loads
Seperate right and left brakes

I have a 1961 economy powerking, starts on the first try every try - it came with a 48 inch deck(you could get a 60") deck and only a 8hp engine and believe me it can out pull and out cut a new 20 hp, because of the gearing and weight and torque the engine and tranny can produce.

Now parts and attachements are hard to get, but it works for me.

Martin

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
