Well I raise a few Holstein heifers from birth to freshing from time to time. I use AI only because like you the cost and "HANDLING" of a bull is more than AI. You will need a head gate or some means of holding the cows to AI. The hardest part of AI is watching your cows to see when they are in heat but with the new drugs it makes it a lot eaiser. It is not worth the trouble of training and keeping the needed equiptment to do it yourself for 6 cows, just pay a AI person to do it for you. The Vet can usually tell you of one in your area. While you can only get proven registered stock through AI it is not that bad. I pay $35.00 and up per cow/visit. If I use drugs to synchronize all coming into heat at the same time The cost is lower per cow as only one trip is needed. This proven stock will greatly increase the genetics of your herd as you will be able to afford a lot better stock with AI verses buying a bull. As far as renting a bull that is very hard in my area. You have to know someone very well to chance your bull getting sick from some one else's cows. New cows should be quarantined on a new farm to stop the spread of disease onto your farm. If you need to know anything else about AI or the synchronizing drugs just ask as I will be happy to help. John
