Cast Iron radiators were used 4 ways; Steam; gravity return pressure supply/ vacuum return Hot Water; one pipe system two pipe system When I was young ( 1940s and 1950s) I helped with pipefitting jobs, taking out cast iron radiators and installing baseboard radiation. We would move some of the radiators to the basement to provide heat down there. When Doing this, we would have to change the taps on the radiator. They all had 4 taps. We removed the plugs with an old pipe wrench and a hand sledge hammer.
