The danger with ebay, and any other auction is the false sense of security you have when no one is contesting your bid. Remember, the bidding is not over until the auction is declared finished. The safe way to approach ebay is to bid what you think it is worth and then leave it alone. Other people will bid what they think it is worth or in some cases try to run the value up on you (all the more reason to bid reasonably)If you get outbid at the last moment then so be it. The power of ebay is that individuals get invested in time and thought and end up bidding more than they should. The final analysis, and this holds true with any auction, you end up paying more than anyone else, thus are you really getting a deal? Maybe you do sometimes, but I wouldn't hold my breath or bet the farm on it. Many people contact the seller on the sidelines and negotiate a deal, to me this is an unethical practice and it continues to degrade the concept of an auction where supposedly a fair market value is reached (explain that to some of the dreamers though).
