engine hours

How many hours should a well maintained gas engine last before it needs to be rebuilt? I recently bought a 1972 Ford 2000 that has 3700+ a few hours and it runs great without the slightest sign of smoke. I'm not sure it turns a complete revolution before it cranks. There are no signs of a recent rebuild. I guess I just thought 3000 hours would be about it.
