This will work for any vehicle.
First you need to know your hitch rating. You say 10,000 lbs. I would think this is with a weight distributing set up and that would be hard to do with a pintal. At 10,000 lbs your tongue max should be about 1,000 lbs. I would say with out the weight distributing set up your hitch is rated at 5,000 lbs gross and 500 lbs tongue; but that is for you to determine.
Now determine the GVWR of your truck. This is on a tag on drivers door/post. Next determine the GWR of the trailer. You say yours is 18,000 lbs.
Then take your truck to the local truck stop to weigh it. I like using Cat scales because they are guaranteed. Find closest location here First you should weight just the truck. $8.00 You will be given a scale ticket that will look like this.
1) steer xxxx
2) drive xxxx
3) trailer 0000
4) gross xxxxx
This will be Ticket #1

Then you will weigh the truck and empty trailer. If you do it in the same day tell them it is a re-weigh $1.00 This will be ticket #2

Now subtract line #4 on ticket #2 from truck GVWR
Subtract line #3 on ticket #2 from trailer GWR
Subtract line #3 on ticket #2 from hitch rating
Take the smallest number. This is the total load weight you can haul.

Now you can load the load on your trailer and re-weigh. Subtract line #2 on ticket #1 from line #2 on this ticket. This is your tongue weight. Adjust the load on your trailer to get this with in limits.

Sure hope this made sense and you could follow it.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
