JJ You don't have to plow every year in some crops. With wheat, it is good to plow every year because it will develop a disease called "tan spot" that will kill wheat. This disease thrives in residue, so it is advisable to bury the residue. However, plowing can create what is called a hard pan in your soil. This is where the plow rides every year, year after year, and it will essentially be a hard packed layer of soil that is not penetrated by roots. If you do plow, I would recommend deep "ripping" your ground about every four to five years. This should tear up the hard pan and allow for better root penetration as well as the ground drying out faster after a rain. In a lot of cases, no tillage is necessary, but it is all up to the individual. What works for some, may work for others, but not necessarily for you. Stick with what works for you and have fun.
