transmission noise

My ford 600 with 4 speed transmission makes a banging noise in 2nd gear. It sounds like a hammer banging around on the inside of the transmission. It runs fine in 2nd. I took the cap off the transmission and nothing seemed to be amiss. Does anyone have any ideas about what the problem could be? It only makes the noise in 2nd. Thanks for any info.
