I've been selling old stuff for a long time, and most of my customers started buying from me because they were referred by someone else. A good reputation is just as easy to acquire as a bad one; but the bad one will get more advertising!
Just yesterday a Lady came in with a item she had bought from me a couple of days before. She had decided she wanted a different piece...but she really liked the one she had bought...would I take the original item back in trade, and then mark it "sold", so she could make payments on it?...Sure, why not!
I remember a business in Deadwood that had the motto of: "The customer always comes first!"...Works, no matter what you're selling!
