Wille, When I was on dad's farm in the late 50's, we had a JD M. (used mostly for corn planting in the wheel tracks, and mowing, (sickle bar) and raking hay, and pulling wagons). I had the oportunity to borrow the neighbors 5' brush chopper,(really a NEW item then), pull type, and I tried to run it with the M. needless to say, 5' was too much for it to do more then cut pasture grass. Did just OK on the grass but would just kill the engine when I tried some small, 1/2" or less, brush. As for the $'s, sounds high, even with the brush cutter.
