Unless you're cutting lawn or hay with it, I've never found sharpening to be worth the time. You're sure to get someone with the opinion that it's harder on the unit to cut with dull blades, which I suppose is true, but unless you have a really cheap unit, or are really pounding the aitch out of it, I can't imagine it making enough difference to be noticeable. I have a Woods M5, which is described as a "medium duty" unit. I've cut alders and poplars up to 3" thick with it for 11 years now, and never sharpened a blade. Replaced some when they broke, but never sharpened one. Gearbox and drive shaft are as tight as new. Did have the end play on the gearbox adjusted one time, about 5 years ago.
