Ford Powerstroke

I have a 97 F350 Ford Powerstroke I purchased about a year ago. The previous owner said the truck had been "chipped". Where is the chip installed on these models? Is there an advantage to using a programer to increase the power on these trucks? I have been told a programmer is more efficient than the old style chip. Sorry for all the questions but I am not familiar with all these new electronic gadgets.
