The classic tractor people generally tend toward the tractors they like - many are basically the same. These people bought them for particulars reasons or functions. Like they needed a 60" mower or a front loader, or a bush hog etc..

Look in the classified ads here and MOST importantly go to some of the older local dealers and see what they carry. Restoring older tractors is easier when you can go somewhere and ask the person - hey joe how does this work...

Note - the hitch can be very important IF you want to add components that are not of that mfg. For instance if you want to add a generator - if your older tractor has a proprietary hitch you will not be able to....

Also the older tractors were designed to do WORK. Pull heavy things, push, plow, the frame was designed to withstand the abuse and they were geared to provide torque and power to implements and wheels.

Personally...

I have an economy jim dandy - a smaller version of the economy tractor. You can find these for around 1500 with a 48" belly mower, attachments are available.

Many times there are many 3rd party mfg's of spare parts etc. especially for the fords, IH Farmalls, and others listed on the main site.

Owning older tractors is alot of fun if you like to tinker with things - however, things are generaly always breaking now and then, you cannot go and buy a new one you have to get the old one replaced or find a replacement..

It is interesting to note that the economy tractor will run a 60 inch mower, with only a 14hp engine, while todays 60 inch mowers require a lot more horsepower

I have only a 8hp motor, but I never run it more than 1/3 open at a time. Yet can do things that larger garden tractors cannot.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
