In Washington it's 18.4 cents federal and another 28 cents for the goobernor for a total of 46.4 cents, one of the highest gas tax rates in the U.S. Of course it's all needed because they end up paying sales tax on road building materials, which shifts some of that tax to the state general fund, and they also require that their contractors pay "prevailing wage", which is equivalent to the highest union wage in the area. Those two things alone drive the cost of road construction up probably 20% over what it should be.
