Your 4020 is a 12 Volt tractor.You need 2 6 volt batteries hooked in series.One positive going to the starter,the negative on that battery going to the positive on the other battery,and that battery's negative to ground.The way you wired with 2 12 Volts possibly gave you 24 volts,and there is a good possibility that you have fried the alternator,fuel gage and indicator lights,and the fuel solenoid on the injection pump,unless the circuit breakers kicked out.You need to get a wiring diagram and sort out your battery cables and alternator wiring before further damage is done.
