Try looking for information about the Lombard steam log hauler. I think there is a picture of one in "Stuck and troubled" on this site. It was basically a steam locomotive set up as a half track, with skis on the front. It was used to haul a "train" of sleds loaded with logs. The original version was steered by a horse harnessed to the front sled. As I recall the story, Lombard got the idea for tracks by watching a horsepower, a treadmill for horses that was used as a stationary source of power.
