In MY neck of the woods, yellow jackets build their nests in the ground, for the most part...which makes them a danger for children and pets. Upon occasion, I HAVE seen them build a nest in a pile of leaves sitting on concrete. For the nests in the ground, I usually pour about a pint of gasoline--very quickly, I might add, as this tends to pi$$ these little boogers off to no end--down one of the holes where they enter/exit the nest. Then, after moving the gas can a good distance [not LESS than 10 feet...20-30 feet is better] away, I usually follow that with a match...and you'd be surprised how many other entrance/exit holes you'll discover! But the nests are made of a paperlike material, and, when the gas burns itself out, the nest will usually be destroyed.
