Actually, for many implements there were adaptor kits whereby a machine set up for 540 could be switched to 1000 and vice-versa. The parts usually include different gears or pullys but the resulting operating rate for the machine remains the same! A sicklebar would still move back and forth at the same rate as before, BUT if switched to 1000 from 540, you could use a bigger (1000 only) tractor if necessary, even though the hp requirement wasn't there. I suspect that those factory "kits" are a little harder to come by, but that by consulting a parts book, they might be available that way!
