Dad and I are independent heavy equipment mechanics from Concord, NC. Our hourly rate is $74 (field or shop) and $1.10 per mile traveled for field work, which is 99% of what we do. I know the local heavy equipment dealerships are all a little higher than we are in the field, but some of them drop off a dollar or so from that for their shop labor. Then you have the ones that do shop work based on "flat rate" which in some cases can increase the per hour rate dramatically. If your doing it "on the side" and the guy is paying in cash then it pays to drop a little off the norm. That doesn't happen often with our customers, but when it does we normally cut them a 25% break off the labor total since Uncle Sam is never gonna know about it.
