OT Digging a water well

Other than contracting out to a professional well digger, have any of you been successful in putting in a well to a depth of 50 or 75 foot? What equipment did you use? How long did it take? Here in Washington you can dig your own well and just need to get a permit to do so. You can water up to a half acre without water rights. It was not uncommon in my neighborhood as a kid to hand dig a well down to 25 or 30 foot, but I am not very interested in doing that. I would prepfer to find a cheap economical method to drive a well in.
