Reg. wiring problem.

Will a 4 terminal reg. charge with nothing connected to the L terminal? And I was told it didn't need polarizing when mounting the new reg., would it be bad after trying it without that terminal hooked up? This is on my 300 Utility. It had a 3 terminal reg. on it that checked bad, the shop said it should have the 4 wire. There are 2 wires on one of the terminals, one goes to the "L"? Loren
