The lead lubricated the area where the valve lip contacts the head or block (valve seat). High performance engines designed for leaded gas have been known to experince valve seat erosion when run on unleaded gas. The fix is hardened seats (gas engines manufactured for today's market have hardened seats). If you are experiencing valve seat erosion an automotive machine shop can retrofit hardened seats for you. I am not aware of this problem in low compression tractor engines. The experience with classic cars indicates the seats are only required for engines that see a lot of use. Someting to check the next time you have your (tractor's)head off. Not something to lose sleep over.
