Can I use my alternator to recharge a discharged battery? A. No! When installing an alternator, the battery should be fully recharged before vehicle use. In many cases, depending upon how thoroughly discharged the battery is, it can take 4-8 hours. Most technicians and DIYers don’t want to wait that long so they just get the vehicle running, and figure that by driving the car around the alternator will charge the battery. In some cases with weather extremes the battery never gets fully charged, and in all cases the alternator is being overly stressed asking it to do a job it was not designed to do. This leads to premature failure. Q. Before I install a new or remanufactured alternator, what should I check? A. First, make sure the battery is fully charged. Depending on the state of the battery, this could take between 4-8 hours. You can not use the alternator to charge a battery as this will overly stress the alternator and could cause a premature failure. Second, check all battery cables and connections. It is good to clean any visible corrosion, but it is also necessary to perform a voltage drop test between the battery cable terminal at the battery and the opposite end of the same cable, whether it is at the starter, alternator, or a ground connection. If the cables are badly corroded, current can not adequately reach the battery to maintain the charge. This could again cause a premature failure of the alternator.
