RAB, On in-line 4 and 6 cylinder engines, I put a cylinder at TDC on the exhaust stroke by watching the valves for when they "rock"; one closing and the other opening. Then I set the companion cylinder because I know then its on TDC on the compression stroke. They will be paired 1-4 and 2-3 on 4 cyls and 1-6, 2-5, 3-4 on 6 cyls. You still need to know valve clearances and which valve is which but you don't need to know firing order or direction of rotation. Someone on the JD board probably knows the settings. Hope this helps. Most 4 cyls will be 1-3-4-2 and all 6 cyls I know of fire 1-5-3-6-2-4. Tommy
