You have to remember the G in GVW stands for "Gross", meaning the entire weight of the trailer and the load. The most common flat trailers available have either tandem 3500# axles (7000 GVW) or 5000# axles (10000 GVW). The trailer probably weighs in at 1500 lbs all by itself so a 7000 lb GVW only leaves you about 5500 lbs of available load carrying capacity. I prefer to go overkill on things like this, so I would opt for a trailer with 10000 lb GVW. And yes, definitely with brakes. Makes? It seems like every area has a trailer builder locally. Around here you seem to get a really good trailer for the money from Big Bubba's Trailers in Ogden UT. I have one and I like it a lot. I've seen other builders from MO and KY selling trailers on ebay.
