I agree with Ben on the idea of steel splitting stands if you intend to run the engine. For examples, go to www.dodgecity.net/cofer or call cofer at 316-227-6170. Their literature has a lot of detail in how they build their stands. and they will send you a price list as well. For wood cribbing, I use chunks of 5x6 posts, of various lengths. I also made four units of heavy blocks: each unit is four pieces of 5x6x20 inch, bolted together (not nailed!) with 3/8 inch redi-bolt, countersunk. Depending which way you turn the unit, you have a 10, 12, or 20 inch block. Very sturdy for holding up 4wd tractors or other heavy machinery.
