Probably the easiest way, is to take the cover off the magneto, pull the spark plugs (so that you can turn the engine over by hand easier), then, take a paper clip, attach it to the magneto case with a screw, and bend the paper clip so that it is about 3/16" away from the metal contact on the coil. Then, get a friend to watch the space between the clip and coil as you turn the flywheel forward, you should hear a "snap" as the flywheel comes around at "LH Imp", and again 180 degrees later. A decent spark should also be visible each time you hear the snap, which is the impulse coupling on the magneto. If you have spark there, then you can assume the magneto is working, put the cap back on, and check the spark plugs.... Good Luck!

A Question for Dads This recent topic from the Tractor Talk discussion board is being highlighted because it is an awesome display of the caliber of individuals that have made this site their own. The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
