Your reference to sheet metal reminds me that pants for loggers made of the brown canvas ("duck") material are referred to as "tin pants". As they get saturated with pitch, oil and chainsaw gas, they get stiffer and stiffer til they'll stand in the corner when you take them off. I have one set of "tin" overalls for haying and other "contact" work, but you'll find the blue denim variety are much more comfortable for tractor driving and general bull-cookin' around.
