John: A stone boat is typically a flat piece of steel that large stones are rolled onto, thus saving the effort required to lift them into a wagon or similar transportation. You roll the stone(s) onto the stone boat, then drag it to wherever you want to put the stone, usually the edge of the field. Common modifications to the basic boat include wooden runners and an angled front section so the boat doesn't hang up when dragged. An old car hood is probably the most common stone boat, but much more elaborate ones are also used.
