Mike, The John Deere 1020 is one of the finest 40 HP tractors around. It is the base for the industrial model 301 and the base for the 300 series tractor/loader/backhoe. The drivetrain from the split between the engine and bell housing is identical to the larger 1520, 2020 and others, thus the transmission, axles etc are robust. The knock that you hear may be from several items. First, it's hard to distinguish from the diesel rattle. I've had 2 gas models and both knock. Some is attributable to the hydraulic pump in the front. If it has a rod knock, a fast idle with no load and letting off sometimes reveals a loose rod. Main bearing knocks are usually revealed by leaky main seals. Good luck Ken McWilliams
