If you have a spare headlight bulb, and some test leads with alligator clips lying about, you can charge the 6 Volt battery safely with a 12 Volt charger. Hook the headlight bulb between one of the charger leads and the battery. The light bulb will be bright at first, and get dimmer as the 6 Volt battery charges up.

Please use safety googles when working around the battery. I personally have had 2 batteries explode over the years, and just his week, a friend of mine had an almost new side-post battery in his car. It wouldn't start, and when he wiggled the side-terminal cables, the battery exploded. He was lucky, and from where he was standing, to the side, the hood blocked the flying acid from his face.
