Indiana schools have become revolving doors for superintendents, also. I work in a rather large system that is generally acknowledged to be a pretty good one. We had an EXCELLENT long-term superintendent that retired in his mid-60s. He was followed by a guy who couldn't be content to let things run as they were and simply make improvements. This guy had to stir the pot and try to make a name for himself. When things didn't go his way, he decided he was "emotionally burned out" and took a big severance settlement. The school board went on a nationwide search, and hired a complete loser. This guy left less than two years later with a huge severance settlement, and left us in very bad financial shape. He wasn't the only reason we had financial troubles, but he was a big part of it! Finally, they moved the curriculum director into the job on an "interim" basis. She did the job with enough grace and determination that she now has the official title. Sometimes the best talent is already on staff.
