Personally, I much more appreciate seeing ( or driving) an old tractor pulling a plow or cultivator through a field, doing what it was designed to do. Seeing a tractor pulling a sled down a manicured track doesn't really show me what a tractor can do. Also, the competitiveness of tractor pulling somehow clashes with the spirit of cooperativeness that farmers have always demonstrated. But to each his own. I used to go to the Washtenaw County (Michigan) Fair tractor pulls as a tractor-pull-loving teen and saw a domineering modified beast blow its army tank engine and send shrapnel into the stands. Quite a few people got hurt, and a few may have gotten killed. I don't remember the details since it was about 30 years ago, and haven't been to a pull since then, until April 2004, when I took my young sons to the Carrollton, GA tractor show and pull. They loved it and were glued to the bleachers all afternoon. The pullers were mostly old iron, including a rusty, unrestored Case C and a rough-looking Case CC that also appeared to be just retrieved from the scrap yard. To me, they were the highlight of the pull, and they did better than most of the newer, shiny machines. The kids are already looking forward to returning next year.
