I don't try to paint with broad strokes. BUT....Sometimes that happens. I don't consider everyone who grew up in the city and moved to the country to be a yuppie. Let me first give you some background on myself. My father owned a rather successful construction business, as well as a large (for its time) dairy farm. We lived in town. (Outskirts of Louisville, Kentucky) I went to college (Purdue--Ag eng.) I spent time in the Army. (nuclear weapons program) After leaving the Army, I took a job in the robotics field. I lived in Louisville (city limits). As my children started to get to school age, I wanted them in the country. We moved near to the family farm. I currently work (full time) running a main. dept. for a large country club. I farm in the evening, on week ends, and vacation time. I am (by definition) a yuppie to some. I sure don't see myself as one though. I have computer equipped my farming operation (Deere GreenStar). I have a (small) collection of old tractors and impliments. I also attend tractor pulls quite frequently. I have NO PROBLEM with anyone else doing their thing. (I just can't see ME dumping my hard earned money into one) My entire point has been, and still is, people taking over the small "county fair" pulls that WERE for those of us that USE tractors on the farm. We have no problem with the rest of the guys having their pulls, but we would like OUR space too. I posted on Tractor Tales also. I explained my views on there. We were forced out of our pull, by someone with unlimited cash flow. He wanted to set the rules, change them at will, and dominate with HIS tractors. He has virtually locked anyone else out of the fairgrounds, and for that matter, about a 5 county area around us. We can't have a pull without his "blessing". This pull I'm talking about isn't intended to draw a crowd, other than the participants. As recently as 10 years ago, we had over 250 tracors entered in our "field class" pulls. A local farn co-op foot the bill for the sled. Like I keep saying, go right ahead with the other pulls. I wouldn't DREAM of standing in the way of someone elses fun. BUT, they sure did stand in the way of ours. Thanks. John

A Question for Dads This recent topic from the Tractor Talk discussion board is being highlighted because it is an awesome display of the caliber of individuals that have made this site their own. The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
