I do not mean to be disagreeable Scott but I have seven tractors that I farm with. All have 6 volt starters on 12 volt conversions.I have never ruined a starter on any one of them in many years of operation. I think that they are overbuilt like all of the old iron . I once converted a large dump truck 12 volt system to 24 volts.Used the same 12 V starter with out problems. In general you cannot ordinarily use twice the voltage on any other equipment that I am familiar with but starters seem to be the exception.if the engine is kept in good shape you only should have a short period of starter operation. However I must admit that I have had a few times that I have wound on the old starters without problems. Mix temperature with common sense and it works out OK.
